Byrdie's textured-hair guide taps two experts for the routines that keep curls and coils deeply moisturized — celebrity hairstylist Vernon François, and Spoke & Weal Soho's own Karen Miller.

Karen Miller is an Afro-Latina celebrity hairstylist and educator at the Spoke & Weal Soho salon. Her clients have included Solange, Quinta Brunson, Mel B, and Tinashe.

Karen's advice, in brief

  • Give your deep conditioner time to work: for maximum benefit, Miller suggests sitting with a processing cap for the conditioner's full instructed time before rinsing.
  • Keeping curls moisturized doesn't just keep hair soft and supple — Miller says it makes it “more manageable when detangling” and helps “protect hair from damage when styling.”
  • Read your labels: Miller advises staying away from parabens, sulfates, and synthetic colors.
  • Seal it in: applying a serum from mid-length through the ends and finishing with a few drops of oil helps maintain moisture and adds wear time to curly styles.
  • Don't skip the trim. “A lot of dryness stems from dead ends that need to be cut and can't be repaired with products or treatments,” Miller tells Byrdie.
